【Features of this release】
・The project is a revitalization of the former site of the Nihon Shinju Kaikan (Japan Pearl Center), the hub of Japan’s pearl industry. The project will inherit the history of Kobe as one of the world’s leading pearl industry clusters.
・The former building will be reopened as a pearl bidding/auction site, the Kobe Pearl Museum, and other facilities.
● About the Former Building
In 1952, Hyogo Prefecture and others constructed this building as a base for inspection and trade in Kobe as the center of the pearl industry. The building was designed by an architect Yoshimitsu Mitsuyasu and was regarded as a modernist building symbolic of Kobe. The building and facilities had deteriorated over time, and in 2014 it was decided to reconstruct the building. After discussions on the maintenance policy, etc., the decision was made to start this revitalization project.
